Each time a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
